The Global Giant Pandas Protection and Breeding Publicity Campaign “Discovering Twin Cubs” Launched in Chengdu

At 10:00 a.m. on October 24, 2015, which coincided with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the Global Giant Pandas Protection and Breeding Publicity Campaign “Discovering Twin Cubs” planned and organized jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Tencent.com and the Global Giant Panda Home PANDAPIA, and assisted by Conservation International (CI), WildAid (WILDAID) and the Nature Conservancy (TNC) was launched in Chengdu, and a grand press conference and global debut ceremony was also held.

 

Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Director of UNDP, Steve Blake, Communication Manager of WILDAID, Jiang Jidong, Director of Sichuan Project of TNC, Qiu Jian, Deputy Director of Wildlife Conservation Division of Forestry Department of Sichuan Province, Luo Ye, Deputy Director of Chengdu Forestry Bureau, Dr. Zhang Zhihe, a researcher and Director of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Mr. Kang Shaojian, Operations Editor of Tencent news content, Zhang Yunhui, Brand Director of the Global Giant Panda Home PANDAPIA, Lipi Jiren, Secretary of Party Branch of Mabian Dafengding National Nature Reserve Administration, Mr. Zhang Qikai, a panda artist and Professor of Oil Painting Department in Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Mr. Liang Liang, Chairman of Chengdu Xuanmen Cultural and Creative Group and Kankansichuan, Jiang Wenwen and Jiang Tingting (twins), Double Champions of Synchronized Swimming World Cup, fan representatives of four pairs of panda twins selected nationwide, Shuare Xinxie (a student representative), Yi "Guardian Angel" from Mabian Dafengding Nature Reserve and experts from the Chengdu Giant Panda Base of Giant Panda Breeding, totaling more than 60 leaders, experts and guests gathered in the "Panda Town" of green Chengdu decorated with beautiful ginkgo biloba leaves in this fruitful harvest season to celebrate the historic achievements Chengdu has made in giant panda protection and to look ahead to the “One Population, Two Bases, Three Centers” long-term plan of the Chengdu Giant Panda Base.

 

More than 70 reporters from over 50 domestic mainstream media as well as more than 10 foreign media attended the conference, and produced on-site news reports.

Champions of World Cups and Twins Fans Participate in the Event of the Public Appearance of Fifteen Panda Cubs

 

Present at the Press Conference and Global Debut Ceremony of the "Discovering Twin Cubs" Campaign were a galaxy of "stars" and fans. This event showcased the remarkable achievements Chengdu has made in giant panda protection in a comprehensive and three-dimensional manner. It spread to global panda fans and netizens a concept of protecting wildlife represented by pandas, conserving biological diversity and creating ecologically civilized environment. Finally it made a public call for discovering the miracle of love and life worldwide.

 

The public appearance of fifteen panda cubs was the highlight of the day, with global media and panda fans gathered in Chengdu focusing on the wonderful debut of these lovely and cute baby pandas! With curiosity and excitement, Patrick Haverman and his children, Jiang sisters, the "Guardian Angel" and four pairs of twins fans representing global panda fans unveiled the mystery of fifteen panda cubs. In the moon delivery room, the Havermans, Jiang sisters, twins fans and the "Guardian Angel" together with six pairs of panda twins and Meng Meng’s cub (infant name: Meng San) were presented together. The event reflected the profound meaning of harmony among humans, animals, nature and environment.

Twins Breeding Rate Reaches 100%, a Record High in the History of Giant Panda Breeding!

 

In 2015, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding bred fifteen cubs from eight embryos, successfully breeding six pairs of twins, a record high in the history of giant panda breeding with a breeding rate of 100%! At the same time, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding cooperated with the Beijing Zoo to breed one cub from one embryo, and cooperated with Toronto Zoo of Canada and Chongqing Zoo to breed two cubs from one embryo, and established the world's largest artificial breeding population of giant pandas in captivity with the existing 152 pandas.
